My keto diet success story begins with me feeling like my life was passing me by.

Just waiting. Waiting for something to happen. 

I lived a sedentary lifestyle.

I played games all day.

I ate all the wrong food. 

I knew they were terrible, yet I stuffed my mouth silly.

I hit my biggest weight ever at 75 kilograms.

I was tired, rundown, and slow.

My thighs were tomato red from rubbing each other.

I dreaded going to the beach with friends because I didn’t want them to know I was fat.

To my friends, I’m skinny. 

Let me explain…

You can’t tell I’m fat and have a big pot belly because I am pretty good at sucking in my gut, so it looks like I have a flat stomach.

I can’t hide my blubbery belly with my shirt off at the beach.

That is me below at 73 kilograms.

Keto diet success story begins with a miracle

I smile at my friends, but that’s me disguising my sadness.

I didn’t know what to do with my life.

Then I heard the best news of my life. 

My girlfriend was late.

We’ve been trying for two years and even considered IVF.

When she told me she was late, I didn’t jump for joy; we had a false alarm before.

We went to the doctor’s office right away to get the real test done.

A few days later, we got the confirmation.

We are having a baby!

Nine months later…

After nine months of treating my girlfriend like a fragile glass, she came into the world.

When I heard her cry for the first time, I couldn’t hold back the tears.

Tears were flowing down my cheek as I watched her little hands and feet moving as she wept.

My problems didn’t seem to matter anymore.

Her simple gaze suppressed the anxiety, sadness, and fear I had.

All I wanted to do was to protect her from harm.

The turning point

I needed to provide for my baby. 

I have to be there for her for as long as possible.

And, I can’t do that with my current self.

I needed to change. 

I wanted to change.

The first thing I needed to do is to fix my health.

I can’t be there for my baby if I am sick.

It was time to get myself back to fit.

Everything is for her from this day onward.

The Magic Pill

I found out about the keto diet when watching a Netflix program called “The Magic Pill.” It was a program about the keto diet and its positive effect on people’s health.

What caught my interest was the fact that people on the keto diet have curbed their sweet addictions.

There’s no denying that I am a sucker for cheesecakes. Not only do I love sweet things, but I also tend to be a glutton when it comes to desserts.

Sweets are my weakness.

So, I studied everything I can about the Ketogenic diet.

The keto diet

What is the keto diet? 

The simple explanation of the keto diet is using fats to use for energy. When our body hits ketosis, we switch our source of energy.

Our body typically uses carbs for energy.

To hit ketosis and stay in ketosis, you have to deprive your body of carbs. 

Once your body runs out of carbs, it switches to fats.

And that process is called ketosis, hence the word “keto.”

The first week of keto

I would describe my first week on keto like hell!

The first day was fine; I thought that this diet is excellent; I can do this.

The second day was not so good. I felt like something was banging in my head.

I was tired; I felt hot. I vomited.

I didn’t go to work that day.

I stopped the keto diet

I started other diets and worked out five days a week.

However, I wasn’t losing weight. 

What the hell is going on? I shouted in my mind.

I was scrolling through my keto Facebook groups and read something interesting.

Someone mentioned exogenous ketones and how it can help with the keto flu.

Keto flu is what I was experiencing in my first week of the ketogenic diet.

Ah! I said. Implying I had an idea, which is rare.

What if I take the exogenous ketones while on the keto diet? I asked myself loudly.

So, I ordered the exogenous ketones.

The first week of the keto diet (again)

Ok, this is the second time I am going to try the keto diet. 

As usual, I dropped the carbs and stayed less than 50 grams per day.

Also, I took the exogenous ketones.

I was expecting a massive bout of migraine jabs in my head the second day, but nothing.

I didn’t have body aches, no vomiting, and I wasn’t tired.

Instead, I was full of energy—more energy than I’ve ever had in a long time.

At this point, I was still skeptical. It’s only the second day, after all.

The next day came, and the next, and I finally got through the first week.

And I felt great!

I would eat breakfast, go to work where I lifted ten to twenty kilograms of boxes all day, and not get hungry for eight hours.

Unlike before, where I would eat a big bowl of oats, not just in an ordinary bowl, it was more like a pot. And after four hours, I would be starving.

I was amazed and became a big believer in the keto diet.

Four months later

I continued the keto diet bursting with energy, never hungry, and I was losing weight.

Week by week, the pounds were dropping like flies.

The interesting part was that I wasn’t even lifting weights. I wasn’t doing any tedious cardio, I wasn’t starving myself to death, and the best part, my sugar addiction vanished.

I didn’t crave sweets anymore. I see a cheesecake, and I say, meh.

Friends and family were shocked when I turned down a massive plate of a New York baked cheesecake.

They asked if I was feeling ok. I was more than OK. I was fantastic.

165 pounds to 133 pounds in 3 months

I wanted to stop after three months at 133 pounds, where is suppose to be my ideal weight. But I wanted to see my abs.

At 133 pounds, I could see some ab lines, but it wasn’t popping.

So, I continued with the keto diet and lost another twelve pounds in a month.

I am now at 121 pounds, and my abs are a little more defined.

This is my Keto diet results. I was fitter, healthier, and my thighs aren’t sore anymore from rubbing each other when walking.

I’m not saying the same thing will happen to you. Everyone is different. It also comes down to your grit and effort. How committed and how bad you really want to be healthier.

I may not have lost a huge amount of pounds, but I was able to lose what’s more important the dreaded belly fat.

Belly fat kills, and you shouldn’t be waiting for it to slowly poison you. Get rid of it as soon as possible.

Pros of the keto diet

The following is what I experienced on the keto diet:

  • I never felt hungry
  • I was full of energy
  • I didn’t lift a single weight plate
  • I didn’t do any boring cardio
  • Curbed my sugar addiction
  • Rapid weight loss

Cons of the keto diet

  • You may suffer from the keto flu (fixable with ketones)
  • Hard to sustain
  • The transition from carbs to fat can be hard
  • Not enough research over its long term use

What I should have known before starting my Keto diet journey

The keto diet is simple enough to understand and implement. Go on a low carb or eliminate carbs in your diet and eat high amounts of fat. 

I’ve stopped the keto diet. But, if I were to do it again, I wish I knew the following:

  • Ketones can help with keto flu. If you are starting the keto diet and experienced the keto flu, try adding ketones to your diet. Feeling weak, nauseous, feverish are symptoms of the keto flu.
  • The keto diet works. I delayed my keto diet success story because it sounded like the keto diet is all hype. I couldn’t believe that you can lose weight eating fat all day or losing weight without a single sweat.
  • That I didn’t have to count calories or eat the same dull food day in and day out, there’s an app that I recently found, which I wished I knew about before going on my keto diet journey. The app makes the keto diet simple. You don’t’ have to count calories. You don’t have to eat the same food every day.

Which brings me to the things I wish I had…

The things I wish I had before doing the keto diet

  • Ketogenic Accelerator – I needed ketones. The ketones helped with the keto flu and provided me plenty of energy. It must’ve worked because I didn’t suffer any side effects on the keto diet after taking ketones.

Conclusion

The keto diet works, but it can be hard to sustain over the long term. Moreover, there is limited research on its long-term use (more than two years)

But, there is a study of obese patients on the keto diet for 24 weeks who reported a drop in bad cholesterol, raised their good HDL cholesterol, and lost weight. Also, blood glucose significantly decreased.

It’s important to note that there was no significant change to the urea and creatinine levels suggesting that the keto diet does not affect the renal function over the 6-month term.

The keto diet worked for me, and found success. However, this doesn’t mean you will have the same story. 

But, you’ll never know if you never try.
