I am documenting my weight loss journey for the world to see.

Why am I doing it when I am so introverted and shy about my belly fat?

If I can help one person, I’d be happy.

The journey will be hard, I know, I’ve been here before.

But, I think it’s time to lose the belly fat, again.

In this weight loss journey blog, you will see what I eat daily, what I do, and the things I take as supplements. 

First of all, how did I get this big? Well, that’s entirely my fault. Doh!

It seems my calorie surplus was way too high when trying to gain muscle mass. Maybe I should have kept it to 500 calorie surplus a day, rather than 1000. Too late now. 

All I can do is try to lose this belly fat before summer hits Australia. Yup, I’m in Australia. Where the sun seems to get closer and hotter in summer.

The last summer was a scorcher, more so than the previous. Year after year, the sun is getting stronger. You might even say that Australia melts each year.

Hence, there are more cases of skin cancer in South Pacific countries, such as New Zealand and Australia.

But Australia has the best beaches in the world. My family will probably be visiting the beaches more than a dozen times these coming hot months.

So, it’s time to get beach body ready. Well, try to anyway. 

About me or my body

Something you have to know is that some people are gifted to lose and gain weight quickly. Some can eat pork crackling, cheesecakes, and many yum yums but do not gain weight (ectomorph). And people who gain fat instantly (endomorph). 

I hit the jackpot by being an ecto-endomorph. My body has a hard time gaining muscle and quick to gain fat.

Moreover, my metabolism is slowing down to a halt with my age at 40. My body is losing muscle as I type this blog, and fat is accumulating more and more in my stomach as I get older.

My point is that even if you are like me, struggling to build muscle and lose fat, it’s not impossible. All we can do is work harder.

I know it may seem unfair, but you take what your mama and papa give you. Instead of complaining, let’s be thankful that our parents had sex at the right time and gave us life.

First step to weight loss journey

It’s great to be educated about weight loss and nutrition. But, you only need to know two things to lose weight. And, you probably know it already, that is, diet and exercise.

The first step to the weight loss journey is to start. The needle won’t move if you are planning, reading, and watching fitness videos on the internet. Go out there and move.

Weight loss journey week by week

This journal will detail my weight loss journey, week by week. I started to watch my food and exercise in the middle of the week, so I decided to consolidate those days to week 2, which officially became week 1. To further explain, unofficially, my weight loss journey started the week before the official week 1 of my weight loss journey. Are you confuse yet? Let’s not overthink, and let’s concentrate on the end goal. And that is, to lose weight and build muscles.

Words can have a hard time explaining things to people. Teaching how to tie a tie is easier when shown.

When it comes to exercises, when movements are involved, the easiest method to teach is by showing.

Also, you can’t visualize someone weighing 200 pounds without knowing their height. But, it’s straightforward when you watch them in person.

When you look at me with my clothes on, you’d think I am skinny, or lean. However, you can’t see how fat my belly is, underneath my clothes. My belly fat is the fattest part of my body. But my legs, arms, face is not so bad.

Everyone I know is shocked when they see me with my clothes off. And, I quote my friend after seeing me take my shirt off, and my belly fat flopped out:

“fat ass.”

I’m very much introverted and horrible on camera. Watching my videos talking and explaining things will make you cringe and fall asleep. However, you may have an easier time learning how to lose weight by watching others.

Don’t discount my photography skills though. I started as an avid photographer capturing night lights, walking around Asia catching people’s everyday life, and shooting the golden hours.

Weight loss journey questions

The following are questions you may want to ask when you start your own weight loss journey:

  • Do you need to lose weight?
  • Do I have conditions that can prevent me from losing weight?

Do I Need To Lose Weight?

It may seem like a silly question but your weight could be normal. Your body composition may look overweight but in reality, you’re normal.

People that are skinny but hold a significant amount of body fat is more dangerous than someone who is visibly big and fat.

A skinny fat person would never think of losing weight. A thin person may have plenty of visceral fat wreaking havoc in their system without them knowing. Most of the time, when they find out, the damage is extensive.

Depending on your circumstance, weight loss may not be for you. Instead, building muscles may prove beneficial to your health than losing weight.

Do I have underlying conditions that may prevent me from losing weight?

Before you do all the hard work, deprive yourself of good foods, before the pain. It’s best to find out whether all the grind, the tears, the sacrifice you’ll make will result in weight loss.

There are diseases and medical conditions that can prevent you from losing weight. The following are conditions you may need to ask your doctor to get tested:

  • PCOS
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Cushing’s syndrome
  • Menopause
  • Chronic stress

PCOS

PCOS is a hormonal imbalance causing weight gain. Managing PCOS through a change of lifestyle is the only treatment. So, before you opt for surgery, perhaps seeing a dietitian is better.

Hypothyroidism

Your thyroid produces hormones. And without these hormones, your body won’t function properly. Hypothyroidism is when your thyroid slowly produces hormones, affecting every part of your body, including your metabolism.

Cushing’s syndrome

An abnormally high amount of stress causes Cushing’s syndrome for a long time. One of Cushing syndrome’s symptoms is weight gain.

Menopause

Weight gain is typical in women at menopause. Due to a decrease in estrogen levels, aging, and genetic factors: women tend to store fat in their belly at menopause.

Chronic stress

We live in stressful times, and it can be deadly to our health. Stress releases cortisol hormones to help you deal with your emotions. However, too much cortisol can be a bad thing.

Cortisol can make you gain weight in the midsection and can increase visceral fat. Visceral fat kills. Regular fat is bad enough, but visceral fat is deadly. Visceral fat attaches to your organs and releases toxins that slowly poisons your body.

Weight loss journey quotes

Some days, I lose motivation. Maybe I have a headache, tummy ache, whole lota aches. These aches can dampen my spirit. Perhaps, someone put me down, words hurt too.

What I do to get back on track is to remember my favorite motivational quotes. I recall these words by the GOATs and instantaneously picks me up.

Growing up in a single-parent home with a mom who worked long hours to make sure the bills were paid and the lights stayed on meant I was on my own most nights when it came to dinner. It also means I formed a very close relationship with microwavable dinners at a very early age. I knew they were never the healthiest of options, but when you’re young, alone, and kitchen-inept, popping a frozen meal in the microwave was the quick and easy option. Those habits follow you as you get older. In my early 20’s when I was in the Army, I never wanted to eat in the chow hall, so like most of the guys in the barracks, if we weren’t out getting fast food, we were popping frozen dinners in the microwave. Even when I eventually returned home and moved in with friends, microwave dinners were a mainstay at mealtime. Because let s face it, not only are they quick, but microwave dinners usually fit well into a young bachelor s tight budget. Now in my late 30’s and in the throes of parenthood, I find that my fairly poor diet choices from my youth have begun to catch up with me in the form of an ever-growing waistline. I’ve started to try and correct this by becoming more active. I know, I know, how can someone with a toddler

    1. Hi. Having children to look after makes time very precious. But, we can still find an hour or two for ourselves. One of the reasons why, well pre-COVID, I decided to work out at home, because it saves time from going to the gym and coming home. Saves me at least 30 minutes to an hour. My brother, sister, and I grew up with our single mom. I know too well how busy a parent can be to provide for their kids. We grew up eating take away and microwave food. Luckily, I learned about proper nutrition at a later age. It’s never too late.
